Review: Trilogy Golf Club at Vistancia
AZ Sports & Lifestyle

September 11, 2009

The moment I knew that I would be writing a golf review of Trilogy at Vistancia, a feeling came over me that I haven't felt since I was 10 years-old when my parents told me that we were going to Disneyland, the anticipation kept me sleepless for a week. Yes, I'm a golf geek, but proud of it.

Anytime you get a chance to play one of the top-rated golf courses in the country, you do it. Golf Digest gave Trilogy a 5-star rating, which, by the way, is the only golf course in Arizona to receive that accolade. That's right, the only one! Trilogy at Vistancia is located in Northwest Peoria — a hop, skip, jump, and drive from the hustling city life of Phoenix.

The moment you arrive at Vistancia, you know you're in golf heaven. The beautiful landscaped grounds, and stylish design, set the mood for what will be a day to remember. Visually, Trilogy at Vistancia is eye candy for anyone who's put on spikes. But it goes further than that. The staff at Trilogy went above and beyond what you normally experience at other golf courses. From Rusty who put our bags on the golf cart, to the helpful golf tips from starter Jim Palma, who pitched for the Yankees back in the day.

General Manager Greg Ellis, who has been a golf pro since 1990, has his crew taking care of his guests as if they were country club members who've been there from day one. Greg, who also hosts a popular
golf show Saturday mornings called "Bunker to Bunker" on KTAR 620AM, brings his mid-West style of hospitality to everyone who steps foot on the property/ premises. His philosophy of treating guests, is to bring them back, instead of making it a one-time visit.

The golf course is a well manicured piece of art, as the native grass lines the fairways along a track-housing community which surrounds this 7,000-yard monster. But don't be frightened by the length,
there are five tee-boxes to choose from, which will accommodate golfers of all ability. The course is pretty forgiving — which is good for the average duffer. You really have to hook or slice your shot to lose your ball.

This course is a lot of fun to play, and not frustrating, as I've encountered at plenty of other golf courses here in Arizona. The greens were fast, but true, a challenge that plays with your head as you
stand over your ball just as you're about to putt. The trick to playing this course is to play to its strengths, and to not force a shot. It's tempting, but you'll be rewarded if you play it safe on certain holes. But the real fun is you can unleash the driver too. I used all clubs in my bag this round — something that doesn't happen very often.

After the round, we relaxed in the comfortable settings of the Verde Grill, where manager Dolen Olson greeted us. The atmosphere is open, and warm, with a gorgeous view of the patio and the 18th hole. Golfers and community residents filled the place for lunch. The food itself is almost worth the drive out there. Olson calls his menu “traditional with good depth.” Our server, David, was very friendly and was attentive to our needs. We started with their Fondue Trio with plenty of tortilla chips to dip. A selection of spinach/artichoke, sausage and cheese and a roasted salsa was amazing and extremely tasty. For lunch, I had one their most popular dishes, the Asian salad with coconut-crusted chicken with Asian dressing. The mixed greens, almonds and chicken made for a tantalizing flavor that almost made me lick the bowl. Of course I didn't, but I wanted to. My other choice was to get the famous Reuben, piled high with corned-beef and Swiss. But I knew my conscious would get the best of me, as well as my belly.

The experience I encountered was one I will never forget. Trilogy at Vistancia is all that and more. It's fairly priced too, and is worth the investment for anyone who's got the game of golf on their mind. So there it is AZ SAL readers; now keep swinging.
